Talking all Things Blogging with Sophie Milner from Fashion Slave

I met with the amazing Sophie to have a little talk about pretty much everything, although the main adjective was to talk ‘Blogging’. As blogging is her career and she’s certainly bossing it, who better to talk with. It was so insightful and for sure it won’t instantly allow me to become a crazy amazing blogger, nonetheless it’s certainly a start to know how she started out amongst with all her wise tips and advice.

As it was in person and all open conversation I decided to keep all of the main question and answers, as I didn’t think me responding and my opinions were all relevant. Similarly, we often went off on a tangent so the blogpost would become far too long and dragged out!
How and why did you start blogging?
I've always wanted to go into fashion writing  in some way after I completed my degress on journalism, therefore that was the way to include fashion and have that as an outlet.

How did you get to where you are now?
Dedication, commitment and sacrificing my social life. When I was working full time, I would then spend all weekend getting everything planned, written and done. I think that writing things that are relevant and important that relate to people is a unique selling point.

What's the reality of blogging really like?
Not as glamourous as it sounds as it can be really hard to have an objective and to get your point of view across online without it being twisted. I guess it’s hard to say as I’m behind all the scenes so I know what it’s like, except I don’t know how it looks from someone else’s view and what they think and see. The glamourous side to it is going to all of the brunches and of course being gifted many things like clothes that are worth a lot of money and you aren’t given any obligation to post anything. However, the other side of it is being in gym stuff 24/7, hair up and on my laptop all day basically stressing, planning and working all of the time. Oh, and not being able to sleep because of bad comments which can be quite upsetting if its directed at me.

What would you say you dislike about your job?
Quite a lot of it unfortunately is chasing invoices that haven’t been paid which is a great hassle. Oh, and negative comments, as when it’s about your job and life it can get personal. There is also a greater level of anxiety and pressure to constantly perform at your best via posts. Haters in general. Likewise comparing yourself to others all the time, social media plays a big part of that. People can have the tendency to say I know nothing about fashion or writing, when they don’t know I have a proper degree.

What's the most exciting thing that's happened to you because of blogging?
By far the MANOLO BLAHNIK DINNER next week, it’s so exciting! I can’t believe I will be gifted some shoes, I’m unsure what to wear and can’t stop thinking about it.

Do you have any tips for blogging?
Hm, don’t be afraid to show your voice when writing. You just want to be interesting to hit the market and make friends in blogging to support each other and help you figure out the industry.

What's the best part of your job?
Creative Freedom.
And being my own boss as I can do what I like pretty much whenever I like, and the brands of course! It’s defiantly exciting and scary.

What's some great advice you'd like to share with everyone?
‘Don’t ask, you don’t get’ It applies to everything and is a bit cheeky but why not!
It was so refreshing to meet someone with such huge potential and being so positive and encouraging for the blogging world, certainly a boost. Just generally a pleasure to meet someone to talk about anything (mostly regarding blogging) and have a little break from thinking about the crazy university deadlines.

(Not my best photo aha but thought I'd put it in, whilst looking very pale)
